Name: Eunry Min (Hangul: 민윤리 Hanja: 閔倫利)

Age: 76 (Physically 26)

Job and Income: Car Charging Station Convenience Store Clerk for the car-charging station chain “Fast Forward” | Low Income

Affiliation: Blackjack

Abilities: Electricity Manipulation; Luck Manipulation

Personality:

It’s an unfortunate fact of life that Eunry simply isn’t particularly strong, particularly booksmart, particularly talented in any way at all. He’s determined and hardworking, but very rarely does it actually pay off. The only saving grace he has is that he’s clever, a good liar and good talker who’s very thorough in going to any lengths to make himself seem like he’s more capable than he is, resulting in a false, but convincing, pretentious facade.

In terms of attitude, Eunry acts with a haughty arrogance towards anyone objectively above average (and thus better than him) but is strangely genuinely amiable to those who are considered annoying, useless, or otherwise alienated by most others, if not potentially condescending. He’ll lament that these people’s flaws “are not their fault” but hold anyone better than him accountable for every little thing they do, as their “responsibility” for being “talented.” He’s definitely the sort of guy who gathers receipts and nitpicks on people so that he’s 100% ready when they slip up.

To facilitate this, Eunry has an extremely black and white categorization of everyone as either “weak” or “strong.” It’s his basic belief that all of the benefits of being talented, prestige, reward, adoration, etc, should be taken from the strong and given to the weak. He wants to act as a sort of Robin Hood to reverse the hierarchy, but his tactics and attitude tend to alienate both sides.

However, the categorization mixed with his lie cause him to act as a martyr of sorts; attracting hate as a “rich boy” doesn’t phase him; he views it as a blow against richness as a whole. Especially after becoming Gravefallen, Eunry has few qualms with using himself or his death as a weapon to make a statement.

All of these qualities stem from Eunry’s extreme jealousy of anyone who exhibits strong (or, actually, minor, even) skill over him, and as such, he has issues with his own self-worth and leadership, especially when someone else steps up to the plate. He overcompensates, with words and appearance, to make himself look better in every way, and is absolutely not afraid to sabotage someone else and pull them down to do so, which is, interestingly, maybe the only thing he’s actually good at.

Since the 50 years he spent in Purgatory, Eunry has shed his facade. He is openly kind and generous towards the weak, and values solidarity towards them. Still, lack of ambition from them frustrates him, and he sees nothing wrong with pushing people to anger against their will to rise up against others. Towards the strong, he’s still just as spiteful, just as angry, and just as aggressive as before. The only difference is that he no longer has the clout to act like he’s above them in status, so he does so in words, claiming that despite his lack of smarts, of skill, of status, he’s a better person than they’ll ever be.

Quite the opposite from before, Eunry has become quite a self-deprecator. Not in the typical depressed sense, but in the sense that his low opinion of himself drives both his solidarity with other underdogs and his malice towards the strong, as he possesses an extreme sensitivity that causes him to lash out if he even gets a hint of someone thinking they’re better than him or any other underdog. He finds excuses to judge and lop people into the only two categories he knows how to judge by, and can seem rather irrational in this sense.

Eunry develops a strong vitriolic hatred towards unnecessary indulgence and luxury from this point on, viewing it as participating in a broken system, or worse, the mark of an overdog themselves. He becomes very open with his philosophy, that the strong oppress the weak, and longs for the day he can reverse the system.

Background:

Eunry is a native resident of what used to be San Jose, California. Around 9 years ago, when the war was in full swing and evacuations and relocations began, was his graduation year, and simultaneously, the year his city was bombed. He calls himself a genius struck down by circumstance, as building a life from the ground up amongst refugees was nigh impossible. Eunry asserts that the war effort ruined his chances at higher education and a bright, promising future, and feigns an air of bitter superiority for being forced to live in squalor with everyone else.  He and his sister, Cello (Hangul: 민철오 Hanja: 閔撤五), younger than him by six years, get by living in a single room together.

In reality, the war is possibly one of the best things that’s ever happened to Eunry. In actuality, Eunry never HAD the skills or smarts to make it into ANY decent college. But now everyone with a path in life paved for them, including him, has been forced into the same lesser standard of living. Every single peg, square, hexagonal, tetrahedron, whatever, all shoved into the same round hole. Most people’s opportunities have been tarnished, and among his peers, few have the opportunity to stand out.  Society has become a hierarchy where others can’t surpass him, and he has an excuse for his own lack of development.

Eunry led a childhood ripe with expectations and harsh standards. “If you want to survive, you have to succeed” was a common “saying.” Not the best adage for an average boy to take to heart. His childhood was filled with hiding grades, forging scores, and begging teachers, but he scraped by. The looming threat of college, however, worried him. He wouldn’t be able to fake that once the time came, and as the years dwindled his anxiety grew.

Because of his upbringing, Eunry’s always had a jealousy of those who surpassed him, but a begrudging acceptance of his limits, developing a conflict between his embittered determination to succeed and crippling self-deprecation. Thankfully, though, with his entire life uprooted, he wouldn’t have the means to exceed even if he wanted to. With his parents lost to the war, he had to work long hours to support him and his younger sister, and could easily pretend the war had wronged instead of saved him. Success was no longer a requirement so survive.

Cello, meanwhile, is the complete opposite of Eunry. Younger by six years, but twice as smart, twice as strong, twice as capable.  An actual veritable genius. Give it a few years and she would have been the one taking care of Eunry, not the other way around. Nonetheless, she was still only so young. He gave her the excuse that he couldn’t abandon her, and so had no choice but to get a job immediately and sacrifice his own development and self growth to keep them both alive. It was so conveniently easy. “We lost everything, so how could we succeed now?”

This lie, though, only made her work harder to do her part, to get to that high-paying job so that they could finally live in comfort and finally “make her brother be happy again,” which only worsened the problem. For the sake of pride and out of guilt over not being able to provide for his sister who can well take care of herself, and his own incapability, he pretends he’s one of those talented people whose dreams were cut short, one of the people “brought down to this level” whom he’s actually jealous of, and spends his life acting like the sort of person he hates most. As long as he must, he’ll keep up the illusion of someone who was cheated out of a future instead of someone incapable of getting one.

Who’s to say that blessings can’t arise out of tragedy? And as with all blessings, wouldn’t anyone do whatever they could to protect them?

Upon entering Gravefall, Eunry viewed his death as a new opportunity to be something he couldn’t, a chance to be on the top after being on the bottom for so many years. He adopted the persona of a former Fast Forward Board Director, continuing the lie of having been cheated out of his life by death, and using it to foster a status for himself that he could use to help the downtrodden and stand toe to toe with the strong. He found a new hope that he could be something more, but found fault with the fact that many Gravefallen were in themselves, already strong, made stronger by their powers. The imbalance angered him, and he began to greatly pity the other underdogs around him whilst scheming on how to topple the towers that were around him.

Despite this, though, Eunry got very much to nowhere. Even with his power, Eunry couldn’t change the fact that he was slow, incapable, unable to improve no matter how he tried. Months went on, and his vitriol only grew, bitter beyond belief that even with a superpower, he was very much at the bottom.

Thanks to Virgil’s help, 50 years passed, and for once, Eunry has a strength and power he doesn’t know what to do with. Time will tell on what he decides to do with it...

Trivia:

  • Regularly wears a formal blazer over his convenience store uniform and hides his hat and apron in a cheap briefcase with about four layers of black paint over it

    • He no longer does this.

  • Cello, ironically, plays the violin. Eunry plays the triangle

  • Barely understands Korean

  • Carries a pocket watch in his blazer. It works, but he has no idea how to set it since he bought it in a thrift store, so it’s been at 4:19, tragically, for a few years. He’ll look at it every once in a while to look ponderous, though.

    • No longer does this.

  • Briefcase contents:

    • FF Hat

    • FF Apron

    • Extra receipt paper

    • Customer Complaints

    • Deluxe 6-Pack of 50-hour energy™
